The RIccar SupraQuik RSQ1 vacuum is useful for the daily routine of having to vacuum the walls, ceilings, hardwood floors, etc. It has a couple of extension pieces that allow for reaching high into cabinets, around light fixtures, etc. (Not shown in the image is the crevice tool which is very useful for getting into crevices, along baseboards, etc.) It has a shoulder strap to carry the vacuum around the house as needed. However, it is not very practical for carpeted areas of the home though. Oreck also makes a similar style of vacuum. (FYI: the newer version 1.6 is NOT recommended for those with bird mites; as it uses a shake and reuse filter in place of the disposable bags used in the early version.)

PRO: Powerful, bagged vacuum with 25 foot long cord. Easy mobility and not very heavy. Replaceable HEPA bags.

Con: Motor is very loud, may need to wear ear protection. Stiff plastic hose gets tangled easily. Pivoting extension floor attachment tends to fall off easily, may need to duct tape this to the wand.

The Bright Air brand of citrus odor eliminator gel air freshener is a recommended product. It has a strong but pleasant fragrant scent that repels bird mites in enclosed areas; such as closets, kitchen cabinets, etc. It is made with orange and lemon essential oils and can be effective for about 6-8 weeks.

The Bissell Pet Hair Eraser cordless hand vacuum is a product that is highly recommended for those dealing with bird mites in the home. Useful for mites crawling on the skin, on clothing, on furniture, etc. And it also includes a crevice tool for vacuuming along cracks, crevices, etc.

PRO: Powerful suction. Very quiet motor with an electronic on/off touch button. Large pleated filter. Decent battery life between charges. Not very heavy.

CON: Somewhat expensive. The power brush attachment is not really needed for most applications and will quickly drain the battery. Very long battery charge…upwards of 4 hours or more; although trickle charge batteries tend to last longer than quick charge batteries.

Plant Guru incense sticks are a quality product; and can burn for about an hour with very little soot. ‘Balsam & Cedar, ‘Frankincense & Myrrh’ and ‘Lemon Eucalyptus’ are three of the more effective scents for repelling bird mites that are on the walls and ceilings. Useful not only at bedtime but also during the day; such as when eating, showering, etc. These are both fragrant and long lasting. Lysol Dual Action wipes can be effective to use not only in the environment for wiping down surfaces, but can also be useful for getting bird mites off the skin because of the textured surface on one side. It can also make it easier to wipe off the sulfur cream or other lotion that had been previously applied to the skin.

The Citrus Magic brand of cedar scented solid gel air freshener has a strong enough scent to keep bird mites out of certain enclosed areas and can be placed in closets, cabinets, etc. It does not kill bird mites though and is effective until the gel dissipates over time; and is non-toxic for use in homes with children or pets.

The Raid brand of two-sided fly contact paper is effective for keeping bird mites from crawling in certain areas around the home. They can be wrapped around table legs, chair legs, bed frames, etc. FYI: this product is very sticky and vinyl gloves should be worn and use a spray bottle of alcohol to wipe down areas where you do not want the glue to be. The product will remain sticky for a very long period of time.

Harris Roach Powder (Boric Acid) is one of the better products for making a ‘mite dusting powder’. It is 99% BA and has a small particle size which is important when applying into carpeting, fabric furniture, etc.; when dealing with bird mites in the home. Read More…

The HDX spray bottle from Home Depot is a quality product for most water based miticide chemicals. It has an easy to pull trigger and a spray pattern from a fine mist to a stream that will reach over 8 feet. Ideal for most water based miticides, but not for Elector PSP, as it will clog eventually.

The Ryobi 18 Volt cordless hand vacuum (PCL705B) is top rated as far as construction quality and battery life goes. Unfortunately, it is NOT recommended for people dealing with bird mites. It has a small round nozzle opening that is impractical for getting mites off the skin and clothing. There are better choices in cordless vacuums for people dealing with bird mites in the home and car.
